Who we are
An independent, non-political amenity society for Muswell Hill, Fortis Green and Alexandra ward.
Improving our area since 1948
The Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association was formed in 1948 as a non-political amenity society. We care about everything that contributes to the environment and quality of life in Muswell Hill, Fortis Green and Alexandra wards, roads, buildings, open spaces, planning, the lot. Our slogan from the start was “strength through unity”.
Almost 700 households strong, plus a growing list of corporate members, we represent local views on planning, transport, conservation and the public realm. We sit on several public-body committees, including the Alexandra Palace Statutory Advisory Committee and the local Conservation Area Advisory Committee, and our views are sought by Haringey’s officers and councillors. We’re affiliated with the Haringey Federation of Residents’ Associations.
What we do
- Protect. We push back on poorly thought-through planning, defend green spaces, and hold Haringey Council to account.
- Connect. Six bi-monthly newsletters, regular open meetings with authoritative speakers, an annual guided walk, talks, workshops, and a calendar of social events.
- Invest. Our Community Fund awards around £1,500 a year in grants to local grassroots projects.
- Remember. Our Green Plaques programme honours the people who shaped our neighbourhood. Our history book covers 75 years of campaigns.
Our story, in a book
Former Chairman John Hajdu wrote the Association’s history, originally in 2010, updated to 2023. It covers our biggest wins: saving the Muswell Hill Odeon (now Grade II listed), defeating the Archway Road motorway scheme, and stopping Haringey’s plan to cut down nearly 4,000 street trees.
Join us
Membership is £10 a year for a household. It funds the newsletter, the events, the Community Fund grants, and the time it takes to keep arguing for what is good for Muswell Hill.
