From idea to fund application: a quick guide

Have an idea? Want to know how to apply for a grant? Here is a quick guide to help you transform your idea into a well-defined plan

  1. Description: outline what you want to do. What is it? Why is it important? Explain the problem or opportunity your idea addresses within the community.
  2. Research and gather information: collect data and feedback from community members to ensure that your project is needed.
  3. Explore similar projects: look at what others have done for inspiration and understand what has worked or not worked.
  4. Set clear SMART objectives, i.e. make sure they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
  5. Outcomes: define what your project will achieve and how it will benefit the community.
  6. Action plan: outline the specific activities needed to achieve your objectives.
  7. Timeline: create a schedule including each activity’s start and end dates.
  8. Budget: estimate the costs associated with your project, including materials, labour, and other expenses.
  9. Collaboration: identify partners, stakeholders, or community members interested in supporting your project.

This is the starting point for any grant application from private or public providers.
